MRSSL promotes Leadership without stress
The Market Research Society of Sri Lanka (MRSSL) conducted its first members event for 2016 – a lively, engaging talk by guest speaker Laya Alles followed by an evening of fellowship & music, at the Havelock City Clubhouse recently.
Leadership From Within’(without stress) proved to be an evening of inspirational and entertaining anecdotes on managing stress by those in leadership roles, conducted with flair by Laya Alles. The event brought together both new and experienced market researchers alike from member MR agencies in the country.
Opening the seminar, Himalee Madurasinghe, President of MRSSL and the Country Representative for ESOMAR, congratulated the MRSSL committee for its membership drive efforts which had resulted in increasing the memberships over 50 percent.
Roshani Fernando, Secretary of MRSSL, introducing Laya Alles to the audience said that Laya was best known for his leadership training programme which was a distillation of the experiences he had gathered while performing his varied leadership roles across the globe.
Laya an electrical engineer by training, with over 45 years of experience, works as a consultant lending his expertise to varied industries. He is also known as a progressive musician who has the flare to create rhythmically enlightening jazzy tunes with the saxophone and his mastery of a multitude of musical instruments.
The talk mainly focused on building character strength to influence people and how it helps in effective decision making and eliminating apprehensions & stresses while at the same time functioning as leaders. Laya addressed issues such as; how one can learn to control one’s own emotions in order to avoid conflicts through careful self-exploration, knowing the right thing to do and how to do it simply by harnessing the power of critical thinking.
The presentation left the audience both inspired and stimulated, taking home the key learnings on stress management and identifying positive human values which in turn will help to push them in the right direction of effective leadership.
Laya’s presentation came to an end with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Waruna Kathriarachchi, Treasurer of MRSSL. Waruna also took the opportunity to highlight some of the society’s achievements over the short period of time it had been in existence.
A special thanks was extended to the distinguished patrons of MRSSL – Eardley Perera, Tissa de Alwis and Nihal de Silva, for gracing the event and joining in the lively discussion that followed.

Concluding the seminar, Himalee took the opportunity to offer a few encouraging words to the young members of the society. She urged them to channel their enthusiasm, passion and energy for the advancement of the industry and help take MRSSL to greater heights.
The evening was wrapped up by an inspiringly hypnotic musical session with Laya on the saxophone providing a nice accompaniment to the scrumptious dinner and lively member interaction.
